Assurance
1) Assurance, produced by faith:
Eph 3:12
In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.
2Ti
1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not
ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to
keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
Heb 10:22 Let us
draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts
sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure
water.
2) Assurance, made full by hope:
Heb 6:11 And we
desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of
hope unto the end:
Heb 6:19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the
soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the
veil;
3) Assurance, confirmed by love:
1Jo 3:14 ¶ We know
that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that
loveth not his brother abideth in death.
1Jo 3:19 And hereby we know
that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
1Jo 4:18
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath
torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

Assurance is the effect of righteousness:
Isa 32:17 And the work of
righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and
assurance for ever.
5) Assurance is abundant in the
understanding of the gospel:
Col 2:2 That their hearts might be
comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full
assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of
the Father, and of Christ;
1Th 1:5 For our gospel came not unto you in word
only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye
know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.

Saints privileged to have assurance of:
6a) Their election:
Ps 4:3 But know that the LORD hath set apart him
that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him.
1Th 1:4
Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.
6b) Their
redemption:
Job 19:25 For I know that my redeemer liveth, and
that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:
6c)
Their adoption:
Ro 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our
spirit, that we are the children of God:
1Jo 3:2 Beloved, now are we the
sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when
he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
6d)
Their salvation:
Isa 12:2 Behold, God is my salvation; I will
trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and
my song; he also is become my salvation.
6e) Eternal
life:
1Jo 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the
name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye
may believe on the name of the Son of God.
6f) The unalienable love of
God:
Ro 8:38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor
angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Ro 8:39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to
separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
6g)
Union with God and Christ:
1Co 6:15 Know ye not that your bodies are the
members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them
the members of an harlot? God forbid.
2Co 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether
ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that
Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
Eph 5:30 For we are members
of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
1Jo 2:5 But whoso keepeth his
word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in
him.
1Jo 4:13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he
hath given us of his Spirit.
6h) Peace with God by Christ:
Ro 5:1 ¶
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord
Jesus Christ:
6i) Preservation:
Ps 3:6 I will not be afraid of ten
thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about.
Ps 3:8 Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon
thy people. Selah.
Ps 27:3 Though an host should encamp against me, my heart
shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I
be confident.
Ps 27:4 One thing have I desired of the LORD,
that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days
of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.
Ps 27:5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the
secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
Ps 46:1 ¶ <<To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, A Song upon
Alamoth.>> God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in
trouble.
Ps 46:2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed,
and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
Ps 46:3
Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the
mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.
6j) Answers to
prayer:
1Jo 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we
keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
1Jo 5:14 ¶ And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask
any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
1Jo 5:15 And if we know that
he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we
desired of him.
6k) Continuance in grace:
Php 1:6 Being confident
of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform
it until the day of Jesus Christ:
6l) Comfort in
affliction:
Ps 73:26 My flesh and my heart faileth: but God
is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.
Lu 4:18 The
Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the
gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach
deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at
liberty them that are bruised,
Lu 4:19 To preach the acceptable year of the
Lord.
2Co 4:8 ¶ We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed;
we are perplexed, but not in despair;
2Co 4:9 Persecuted, but not
forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;
2Co 4:10 Always bearing about in the
body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made
manifest in our body.
2Co 4:16 For which cause we faint not; but though our
outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

4:17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far
more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;
2Co 4:18 While we look
not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the
things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen
are eternal.
6m) Support in death:
Ps 23:4 Yea, though I
walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou
art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
6n) A glorious
resurrection:
Job 19:26 And though after my skin worms
destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:
Ps 17:15 As for
me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake,
with thy likeness.
Php 3:21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be
fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is
able even to subdue all things unto himself.
1Jo 3:2 Beloved, now are we the
sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when
he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

A kingdom:
Heb 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be
moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and
godly fear:
Re 5:10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we
shall reign on the earth.
6p) A crown:
2Ti 4:7 I have fought a good
fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
2Ti 4:8
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the
righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all
them also that love his appearing.
Jas 1:12 Blessed is the man that
endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life,
which the Lord hath promised to them that love
him.
7) Give diligence to attain to
assurance:
2Pe 1:10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to
make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never
fall:
2Pe 1:11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly
into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus
Christ.
8) Strive to maintain assurance:
Heb 3:14 For we
are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence
stedfast unto the end;
Heb 3:18 And to whom sware he that they should not
enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?
9) Confident
hope in God restores assurance:
Ps 42:11 Why art thou cast down, O my
soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet
praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my
God.
10) Assurance exemplified:
10a) David:
Ps 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the
shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and
thy staff they comfort me.
Ps 73:24 Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel,
and afterward receive me to glory.
Ps 73:25 Whom have I in heaven
but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside
thee.
Ps 73:26 My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the
strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.
10b) Paul:
2Ti 1:12
