The Atonement of the Blood of Christ
1) The Atonement
explained:
Ro 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while
we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Ro 5:9 Much more then, being now
justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
Ro 5:10
For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son,
much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
Ro 5:11 And not
only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we
have now received the atonement.
2Co 5:18 And all things are of God,
who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the
ministry of reconciliation;
2Co 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ,
reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and
hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
Ga 1:4 Who gave himself
for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according
to the will of God and our Father:
1Jo 2:2 And he is the propitiation for
our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole
world.
1Jo 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us,
and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
2)
The Atonement foreordained:
Ro 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be
a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the
remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
1Pe 1:11
Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them
did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the
glory that should follow.
1Pe 1:20 Who verily was foreordained before the
foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
Re
13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not
written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the
world.
3) The Atonement foretold:
Isa 53:4 ¶ Surely he
hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken,
smitten of God, and afflicted.
Isa 53:5 But he was wounded for our
transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of
our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
Isa 53:6
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and
the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Isa 53:8 He was taken from
prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut
off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he
stricken.
Isa 53:9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich
in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in
his mouth.
Isa 53:10 ¶ Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put
him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall
see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the
LORD shall prosper in his hand.
Isa 53:11 He shall see of the travail of his
soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant
justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
Isa 53:12 Therefore will I
divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with
the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered
with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for
the transgressors.
Da 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and
upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and
to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness,
and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
Da 9:25
Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the
commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince
shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be
built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
Da 9:26 And after
threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the
people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary;
and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war
desolations are determined.
Da 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with
many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and
the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make
it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be
poured upon the desolate.
Zec 13:1 ¶ In that day there shall be a fountain
opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for
uncleanness.
Zec 13:7 ¶ Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the
man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and
the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.
Joh 11:50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die
for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
Joh 11:51 And this
spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that
Jesus should die for that nation;
4) The Atonement, effected by
Christ alone:
Joh 1:29 ¶ The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him,
and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
Joh 1:36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of
God!
Ac 4:10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that
by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from
the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
Ac
4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under
heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
1Th 1:10 And to wait for
his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which
delivered us from the wrath to come.
1Ti 2:5 For there is one God,
and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
1Ti 2:6 Who gave
himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
Heb 2:9 But we see
Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death,
crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death
for every man.
1Pe 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on
the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose
stripes ye were healed.
5) The Atonement was
voluntary:
Ps 40:6 ¶ Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine
ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.
Ps 40:7 Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is
written of me,
Ps 40:8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law
is within my heart.
Heb 10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world,
he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou
prepared me:
Heb 10:6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou
hast had no pleasure.
Heb 10:7 ¶ Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of
the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
Heb 10:8 Above when he
said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin
thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by
the law;
Heb 10:9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh
away the first, that he may establish the second.
Joh 10:11 I am the good
shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
Joh 10:15 As the
Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the
sheep.
Joh 10:17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my
life, that I might take it again.
Joh 10:18 No man taketh it from me, but I
lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it
again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
6) The
Atonement exhibits the:
6a) Grace and mercy of God:
Ro 8:32 He that spared not his own Son,
but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us
all things?
Eph 2:4 ¶ But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love
wherewith he loved us,
Eph 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath
quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
Eph 2:7 That in
the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his
kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
1Ti 2:4 Who will have all men to be
saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
Heb 2:9 But we see
Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death,
crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death
for every man.
6b) Love of God:
Ro 5:8 But God commendeth his love
toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
1Jo 4:9
In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only
begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
1Jo 4:10 Herein
is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to
be the propitiation for our sins.
6c) Love of Christ:
Joh 15:13
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his
friends.
Ga 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I,
but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by
the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Eph 5:2
And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an
offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
Eph 5:25
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave
himself for it;
Re 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful
witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings
of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own
blood,
7) Reconciles the justice and mercy of
God:
Isa 45:21 Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take
counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told
it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else
beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.
Ro 3:25
Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood,
to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through
the forbearance of God;
Ro 3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his
righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth
in Jesus.
8) Necessity for the Atonement:
Isa 59:16 ¶ And
he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no
intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his
righteousness, it sustained him.
Lu 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek
and to save that which was lost.
Heb 9:22 And almost all things are by the
law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no
remission.
9) The Atonement, made but once:
Heb 7:27 Who
needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his
own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up
himself.
Heb 9:24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with
hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to
appear in the presence of God for us:
Heb 9:25 Nor yet that he should offer
himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with
blood of others;
Heb 9:26 For then must he often have suffered since the
foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared
to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
Heb 9:27 And as it is appointed
unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
Heb 9:28 So Christ was
once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he
appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
Heb 10:10 By the which
will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once
for all.
Heb 10:12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice
for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
Heb 10:14 For by one
offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
1Pe 3:18 ¶ For
Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might
bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the
Spirit:
10) The Atonement, acceptable to God:
Eph 5:2 And
walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an
offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
11)
Reconciliation to God effected by the Atonement:
Ro 5:10 For if, when we
were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more,
being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
2Co 5:18 And all things
are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath
given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
2Co 5:19 To wit, that God was in
Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto
them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
2Co 5:20 Now
then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us:
we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
Eph 2:13 But
now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of
Christ.
Eph 2:14 ¶ For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath
broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
Eph 2:15 Having
abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments
contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man,
so making peace;
Eph 2:16 And that he might reconcile both unto God
in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
Col 1:20 And,
having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things
unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or
things in heaven.
Col 1:21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies
in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled
Col 1:22 In
the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and
unreproveable in his sight:
Heb 2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him
to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and
faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation
for the sins of the people.
1Pe 3:18 ¶ For Christ also hath once suffered
for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to
death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
12) Access to
God by the Atonement:
Heb 10:19 ¶ Having therefore, brethren, boldness to
enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
Heb 10:20 By a new and living
way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his
flesh;
13) Remission of sins by the Atonement:
Joh 1:29 ¶
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of
God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
Ro 3:25 Whom God hath set forth
to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his
righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance
of God;
Eph 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the
forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
1Jo 1:7 But if we
walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another,
and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
Re 1:5 And
from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first
begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that
loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
14)
Justification by the Atonement:
Ro 5:9 Much more then, being now
justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
2Co 5:21
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be
made the righteousness of God in him.
15) Sanctification by the
Atonement:
2Co 5:15 And that he died for all, that they which live
should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them,
and rose again.
Eph 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the
washing of water by the word,
Eph 5:27 That he might present it to himself a
glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it
should be holy and without blemish.
Tit 2:14 Who gave himself for us, that
he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people,
zealous of good works.
Heb 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through
the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Heb 13:12
Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood,
suffered without the gate.
16) Redemption by the
Atonement:
Mt 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered
unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
Ac 20:28 Take
heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy
Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath
purchased with his own blood.
1Ti 2:6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to
be testified in due time.
Heb 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves,
but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained
eternal redemption for us.
Re 5:9 And they sung a new song, saying,
Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast
slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and
tongue, and people, and nation;
17) The Atonement has delivered
Saints from:
17a) Power of sin:
Ro 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it
was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful
flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
1Pe 1:18 Forasmuch as ye
know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and
gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your
fathers;
1Pe 1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb
without blemish and without spot:
17b) Power of the World:
Ga 1:4
Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil
world, according to the will of God and our Father:
Ga 6:14 But God forbid
that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the
world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.
17c) Power of the
devil:
Col 2:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he
made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
Heb 2:14 ¶ Forasmuch
then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise
took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the
power of death, that is, the devil;
Heb 2:15 And deliver them who through
fear of death were all their lifetime subject to
bondage.
18) Saints glorify God for the
Atonement:
1Co 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God
in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
Ga 2:20 I am crucified
with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the
life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who
loved me, and gave himself for me.
Php 1:20 According to my earnest
expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but
that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be
magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.
Php 1:21 ¶
For to me to live is Christ, and to die is
gain.
19) Saints rejoice in God for the Atonement:
Ro
5:11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus
Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.
20) Saints
praise God for the Atonement:
Re 5:9 And they sung a new song, saying,
Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast
slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and
tongue, and people, and nation;
Re 5:10 And hast made us unto our God kings
and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
Re 5:11 And I beheld, and I
heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the
elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and
thousands of thousands;
Re 5:12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb
that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and
honour, and glory, and blessing.
Re 5:13 And every creature which is in
heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and
all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and
power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for
ever and ever.
21) Faith in the Atonement is
indispensable:
Ro 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a
propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the
remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
Ga 3:13
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us:
for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
Ga
3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus
Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through
faith.
22) The Atonement commemorated in the Lord's
supper:
Mt 26:26 ¶ And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed
it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said,
Take, eat; this is my body.
Mt 26:27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks,
and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
Mt 26:28 For this is
my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
1Co 11:23 ¶ For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto
you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took
bread:
1Co 11:24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said,
Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of
me.
1Co 11:25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had
supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as
ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
1Co 11:26 For as often as ye eat
this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he
come.
23) Ministers should fully set forth the
Atonement:
Ac 5:29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and
said, We ought to obey God rather than men.
Ac 5:30 The God of our fathers
raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.
Ac 5:31 Him hath God
exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give
repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
Ac 5:42 And daily in the
temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.
1Co 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received,
how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
2Co 5:18 And
all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ,
and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
2Co 5:19 To wit, that
God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their
trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
2Co 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech
you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
2Co 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that
we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
24) The
Atonement typified:
Ge 4:4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of
his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his
offering:
Heb 11:4 ¶ By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent
sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God
testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
Ge 22:2 And
he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and
get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon
one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
Heb 11:17 By faith Abraham,
when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises
offered up his only begotten son,
Heb 11:19 Accounting that God
was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he
received him in a figure.
Ex 12:5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male
of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the
goats:
Ex 12:11 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded,
your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in
haste: it is the LORD'S passover.
Ex 12:14 And this day shall be unto
you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your
generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
1Co 5:7 ¶
Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are
unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
Ex 24:8 And
Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold
the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you concerning all
these words.
Heb 9:20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament
which God hath enjoined unto you.
Le 16:30 For on that day shall the
priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be
clean from all your sins before the LORD.
Le 16:34 And this shall be an
everlasting statute unto you, to make an atonement for the children of Israel
for all their sins once a year. And he did as the LORD commanded Moses.
Heb
9:7 But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not
without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the
people:
Heb 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own
blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption
for us.
Heb 9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many;
and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto
salvation.
Le 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I
have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it
is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
Heb 9:22
And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of
blood is no remission.
