Heaven and how we get there

The Bible speaks of three heavens.  The word translated "heavens" in the very first verse of the Bible is a plural Hebrew word meaning more than two.  Paul speaks about being caught up to "the third heaven" and equates it with "Paradise" (2. Corinthians 12:2-4) .  From the context of the 691 references to heaven(s) in the KJV Bible it is evident that the first heaven is the atmosphere of this planet earth, the second is physical stellar universe beyond the earth's atmosphere and the third is the dwelling place of God "Our Father which art in heaven" (Matthew 6:9).

This third heaven  is the Father's house where Christ has ascended to - " So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God." (Mark 16:19)

It is the where those who have trusted Christ will live - " In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.   And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also." (John 14:2)

Once on the Narrow Way, the believer in the Lord Jesus Christ will reach his ultimate destination, heaven, either at death, or when the Lord Jesus Christ returns for His people. This later event is called the "Rapture of the Believers" on the chart and is described in 1.Thessalonians 4:13-18   The word "rapture" comes from the thought of being "caught up" to meet the Lord at His return. "But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.  For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep  in Jesus (whose bodies sleep in the grave) will God bring with him.  For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent (proceed) them which are asleep.  For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:  Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.  Wherefore comfort one another with these words."

Death for those on the Narrow Way  means to be "absent from the body and present with the Lord." (2.Corinthians 5:8).  The body goes into the grave and the soul goes to be with the Lord Jesus Christ in heaven to await the "rapture" or "resurrection"  of the body.  (the Rapture is part of the First Resurrection).

This is the comfort that the Lord brought to Martha and Mary when their brother Lazarus died.  " Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.   But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.   Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.    Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.   Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:   And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?   She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. (John 11:21-27)

Where will you spend eternity?
